May 26 2010 GILMORE'S ROAD TO SALEM: THE FIDDLE TUNE, THE IRISH

BANDMASTER, AND THE WINTER ISLAND MUSTER ~Jim Dalton

Salem proudly claims Patrick S. Gilmore as a "favorite son," but Gilmore's

musical journey to and from his Salem days was crowded with surprising

accomplishments and adventures. Enjoy the saga of one of the most famous

musicians in 19 century America.

In this illustrated lecture, using the music Gilmore brought to the Winter

Island muster of 1853 (and beyond) as his focus,

Jim Dalton explores the event, the man, and the music.

June 2 2010 "History, Harmony, and Headlines"--the Footes of Salem,

Music, & The Salem Gazette~Maggi Smith-Dalton

Music wove its magical thread through the lives of the Foote family of

Salem, bequeathing its gifts to them, and, through them, to America at large.

You'll share that adventure during this musical/illustrated talk,

focusing on composer and musician Arthur Foote,

one of the most important musical figures of his time.

We'll also take a long and fascinating look at the importance of The Salem

Gazette, edited by his father, in 19 century Salem, and come to understand

why the Gazette was "familiar and welcome as an old friend in the homes of

succeeding generations of Essex County people during more than a hundred

years," -- beloved, then, and now.

June 23 2010 "Salem's Fate": The Decline & Fall of Salem as World Trader

in the 1820s~Robert Booth

In 1820, Salem was the richest place, per capita, in America, the eighth-

largest in population, and a center of culture, finance, insurance, and publishing.

But a worldwide depression and changes in Congressional policy and the rise of the industrial economy

had a profound impact on Salem’s shipping, and forced the merchants to explore new lines of business.

Stephen White, merchant, led the effort to create a modern Salem, reflected

in unification of the town's long-divided politics, the building of East India Marine Hall,

the founding of the Barton Square Independent Church,

and the industrial ambitions of Salem Mill Dam Corporation.

These efforts were interrupted in 1830 by the assassination of White's

adoptive father, Capt. Joseph White, among the seaport's richest men.

Stephen was framed for the murder; the trial exposed a dark underside,

and Salem was never the same. Join historian Robert Booth as we explore

the surprising saga of "Salem's Fate."

June 30 2010 "SINGING THROUGH THE SEASONS; CELTIC MUSIC AS "THE

MEASURE OF THE YEAR"~Jim and Maggi Dalton

The Celtic peoples (who historically populated most of Europe, most familiar

now as those whose roots are in Ireland, Wales, Scotland, Brittany, Cornwall,

Galicia, Isle of Man, Scotland, Wales; Padania and Portugal) are known

worldwide as a music-loving, musically-vibrant culture.

This illustrated performance/lecture will feature Celtic music, folklore, and

history from the various main roots and branches of Celtic music.

Through live performance of Celtic song and dance music, we'll explore

the importance of seasonal ritual music in human history and culture.
